Backpack & daypack
The backpack I used in Thailand was too big for me (in size) and lacked support around the hip which made it difficult and painfull to drag along between places. The big size and packing volume made me think that I had more room to store my things, but I didn’t account the fact that I actually had to carry around my extra stuff too! So this time I’m telling myself that less is more and packing much less and more importantly, lighter! As for the daypack I’m considering just bringing along my backpack I used to carry my books in but from what I’ve read, it’s wise to bring a daypack that can handle different weather situations and also comfortable to carry around. backpack: €120-€150 | daypack: €40-€60
Hiking shoes & hiking sandles
You’ve gotta take care of your feet since you’ll be walking around most of the time. So getting a pair of comfortable hiking shoes is the second item I’m willing to dish out some extra money for. Since I’ll be traveling around Asia and other countries with hot weather I’m considering getting a pair of hiking sandles too, to let my feet breath a bit and for hiking trips along water area’s. Anyone had experience with them? hiking shoe: €150 | hiking sandles: €50-€70
Clothing
When you’re away from home, the clothes in your backpack are all you’ve got so you’ve gotta be prepared for every weather. Luckily for me the majority of the time I intend stay in warm and hot places so thankfully I don’t have to pack as many thick sweaters and jackets. Best advice for cold situations is to wear layers of clothes instead of 1 thick item. I do plan to bring a pair of jeans for those rare occasions where I’ll be going to fancier places. During my trip in Thailand I did learn that they take time to dry and would often smell bad if you pack them while they’re wet and especially with the humidity in Asia.
- 2-3 t-shirts
- 2 tanktops
- longsleeve (thermal) shirt – €60+
- 1-2 pair of jeans
- 2 button-up shirts
- 2 shorts
- 1-2 pair of lightweight cargo pants – €80-€110/each
- 4 (ish) pair of socks
- underwear
- 1 pair of comfortable sweatpants (sleeping, trainrides, cold situations or laundry days)
- all-weather fleece pullover – €80-€110
- all-weather multipurpose hoody – €100-€130
Laptop & accessories
My traveling partner brought along a laptop when we were in Thailand and eventhough it was heavy as hell, we were glad we brought it to view the pictures and videos we took along the way. Eventhough you can find many internetcafe’s and computers at hostels, I still think it’s good to bring your own computer so you can edit some of your pictures and blogposts. Besides I think (and hope) that most places have wi-fi connection so you wouldn’t need to queue to use the computers. Will also be bringing my old little external HD (75gig) to back up the pictures and maybe pack with movies and music. As for camera I don’t think I’ll be spending extra money to get a new camera, so I’ll just be using my Casio EX-Z200. netbook: €300-€450
Miscellaneous
Must get one or two of those microfiber quick-dry towels. Heard some good things about them and I’m sure this is a no brainer to bring, instead of those thick beach towels. Will probably be bringing 2 of them just like with my clothes, just so I have something else to wear while the first pair is drying or in the wash. microfiber towel: €20/each So far according to this list I’ll be spending around €1330 for my gear, but I’ll make that €1500 including some additional minor purchases. I’ll post the complete packing list and purchasing list once I’ve got them.
